Eight slide presentation corresponds to the sermon The Way Marked By Joy – ServiceIt is part three of The Way Marked By Joy series. In part three, we are called to service inside and outside of the church walls.

The Way Marked By Joy – Service looks at the life of Philip. In Acts 6. the number of disciples is increasing, causing the Hellenistic Jews to complain that their widows were being overlooked in the daily food distribution. Importantly, this conflict resulted in the creation of a new position in the church: deacon.

Deacon is a service position. In the United States, we are moving toward a service economy. Which means fewer people are working growing food and working in manufacturing making products.  As a result, more and more jobs are created to service one another. Interestingly, the church has always been built on a service economy. Therefore, to be the body, we must service.

Key message:

The greatest among you will be the servant of all.

Key scriptures:

Acts 6:2-3 and Acts 8:26-31

Personal Note From Dave Milam:

I hoped that the series would be meaningful personally to members of my congregation as well as being meaningful in the compelling drama of the national election. My church, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Purcellville, Virginia is Loudoun County near Washington, DC. We are a 300 member congregation with approximately 120 present in weekly worship.
The Way Marked By Joy series stands as a significant resource for Christians to keep encouraged, active, and faithful. Moreover, I believe The Way Marked By Joy remains a compelling, relevant resource for the church and its members seeking to be resilient in our turbulent times.

With Joy,

Rev. Dr. David Milam, Pastor
St. Andrew Presbyterian Church
