Gidget

“And my God shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

My dream date, as an early teen was the loveable Gidget. She was the prototypical beach bunny. Gidget was a sassy, spirited young girl determined to participate in the “boys-only” sport of surfing. As an awkward, less than confident adolescent, a future with someone so perfect seemed… impossible.

“Life is not a destination…”

Gidget, the movie, was released in 1959, starring Sandra Dee (dreamy). culture was big at the time. It was a youth movement built around surfing and love of the beach, with its own jargon and cool cars. Gidget’s boyfriend was Moondoggie, what a name. In 1965, Gidget was adapted for television, starring Sally Field, America’s sweet heart, at the time. The series focused on the father-daughter relationship, with Gidget receiving moral instruction from her father, resulting in her growing a little wiser by the end of each episode. 

Today, I most associate with the father role. This is a character for whom I can bring a great deal of experience. Actually, when I met Lizzy, she was a lot like Gidget: sassy, “cute as a button,” and full of energy. Adventure seemed to follow her around, just like in the television show. I knew, if she were my lifetime date, my life would always be interesting. God had provided my dream date.

Figuring It Out

Perhaps, like me, you worry about the future. Remembering the character Gidget, however, proves that God has it all figured out. Jesus knew it was only human to worry about the future, so he made this incredible promise: “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32) We need only concern ourselves with becoming the man or woman that God wants us to be and he will take care of the rest. It is his pleasure to give us more than we can even hope for or imagine. 

My sister-in-law, Allison, has a Cricut, which is a computer-controlled die cutting machine, designed for home crafters. With it, she can cut vinyl and make all kinds of cute plaques. One plaque which stuck in my mind said, “Life is a journey. Enjoy the ride.” Such a true statement. Life is not a destination, although we often treat it like it is one. I will be so happy when [fill in the blank].

Enjoy the Ride

Think about your own life’s journey. Are you enjoying the ride or are you putting off all joy until some magic point in the future. I hope you take time to stop and smell the roses, instead of allowing your mind to constantly worry.

From the dreams of my youth, God has blessed my life. How about you? By trusting him, you can have his sustaining presence along the many roads of life. He may even send Gidget into your life.
